Have You Been Booed?

My grandson asked me a question: “Doc (my grandchildren’s name for me), have you ever been booed?”

I am a preacher, of course, and a question like that makes me go places in my mind I don’t want to go. I probably was tempted to say, “of course, I have” or “not outwardly” or some such answer. Instead, I simply said: “I don’t think so. What does it mean to be booed?”

This is how he answered: “We fix a treat for people and put it in a plastic bowl. Then we sneak up to their front door, ring the doorbell, and run. We boo them.”

I have no idea who came up with such a great idea. Maybe it’s unique to one family or one neighborhood. Whatever it is, it is perfect for boys at halloween.

Think of how perfect it is. It has a sense of excitement and danger. It calls for stealth and cunning. The “Booer” has to display courage. It’s just right.

Here’s the best part–the end result is something good. It is a blessing–thoughtful and caring.

You could call this turning the tables on Halloween.

Life is filled with all kinds of events that need to be turned upside down. More than anyone I know, Jesus turned the tables on life as we know it.

He told us to pray for our enemies and love the unlovely. He told us to treat others the way we want to be treated. He told us to return good for evil, turn the other cheek, and go a second mile even when we didn’t want to go the first.

God works in such ways to make us a different people. How will you use this day for good? How will you turn the tables on the evil done to you today?

May God bless you as you return good for evil.

  1. Recently I was informed that Jefferson had a reason for editing the Bible that was new to me. I found it on line and saw that the presentation was a condensed synoptic. It is interesting as the host put the context of all the clippings available in a drop down so one might get context. However, I found many passages/chapters missing entirely. My conclusion to this point is it was Jefferson’s intent to chronicle Jesus’ mission/Purpose to the bare bones. The following is a passage that demonstrates the Person and Mission of Christ delivered in the “Jefferson Bible.”
    You be the judge:
“19: Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?
20: The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?
21: Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.
22: Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.
23: If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?
24: Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
25: Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?
26: But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?”

Thanks Doc for the valuable insight into the important distinction in the development of boys and girls as well as the difference in perspective. We all need help. Thus: Romans 12:4&5 was Designed by our Maker to facilitate our individual and collective Purpose in Worship, was it not?

    Blessings
