Living Out Your Faith

Sometimes the Old Testament gets a “bum rap” for its content and relevance. The New Testament significance is certainly easier to understand. For example, a simple way to explain the New Testament is to describe it as the coming of Christ and how His disciples made Him known.

The Old Testament can be summarized in a similar way by describing it as how God made a people for Himself. The problem is that each book (39 in all) doesn’t fit easily into this scheme.

How do you describe the book of Malachi?

The Book of Malachi was written to those Jews who returned to the land of Judah after the Babylonian exile. Though the people had rebuilt the temple in Jerusalem, they lived in spiritual apathy. They were discouraged about their future and seemed not to believe the promises of God.

Understanding the context of the situation helps you see the relevance of the book. It fits our day perfectly. God called the Jews of Malachi’s day to put their faith into action.

Do we face similar challenges? Isn’t it easier to go through mindless ritual instead of working out your faith in the real world?

What does God want us to do?

First, honor God by giving Him your very best. The people of Malachi’s day gave God the leftovers and acted as if God should be pleased with their selfishness.

Second, choose faithfulness in every aspect of life, especially in your marital and family relationships. Today, we face the problem of dads and moms, husband and wives who don’t honor their promises.

Third, be careful how you speak of God. He has not changed. Like people in Malachi’s day, we tend to question God’s fairness. We ask “where is God?” or “How could God?”

Finally, show your gratitude and devotion to God through your material blessings. Give God your best and live a life of generosity toward others.

Doing these things changes our lives and blesses those around us.
