Living with a “How Much More” God

At least two places in Scripture God is described with the phrase “how much more.”

First, this phrase is found several times in the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus told us not to be anxious, but rather to trust God. He gave the example of the birds of the air and the lilies of the field. If God cares for sparrows, then surely He cares for you as well. Sparrows don’t sow or reap yet God cares for them and feeds them.

It’s the same with the lilies of the field. They don’t toil or spin yet God clothes them with a beauty and magnificence that surpasses that of kingly clothing. “But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith?” (Matthew 6:30).

This describes God’s love and care for the everyday aspects of life. If God so provides for the birds of the air and the grass of the field, how much more will He care for you!

Second, Paul used the phrase to describe God’s keeping us as His own dear children.

How did we come to know Christ? Was it by works of the law or by justification by faith? Paul spent the first four chapters of Romans laying out the case to show that knowing Christ comes by justification by faith alone.

In Romans 5 Paul affirms we have been justified by faith. Because of that justification we experience great blessings (Romans 5:1-11). Paul shows that one of those blessings is being kept by God for all eternity.

Paul’s point is we were not saved by keeping the law (or trying harder) and we will not be kept to eternity by trying harder. “Since, therefore, we are now justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while were were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more shall we be saved by his life” (Romans 5:9-10).

God is a “how much more” God. He cares for our daily needs and He provides for our eternal salvation.

How much more should we praise and exalt such a God!

  1. It has taken a long time, much study and life experience to realize: when Paul stated that he bore witness, he was making the case to his readers and hearers for more than just pie in the sky Hope to get through the day. He presented the Paradigm of our Lord via His Father with the aid of the Holy Spirit to Live and Act in Love as One. All of this leads up to The Big THEREFORE steps:
    1) Romans 12: 1-2;
    2) Romans 12: 4&5 (the many manifestations and proof of that way employed following);
    3) Romans 12:21 The ultimate goal of Worship by employing His Paradigm.

    Indeed: HOW MUCH MORE GOD…

    Blessings
