Ministries That Make A Difference

Over the last two weeks I have written about the ministry of deacons and about the ministries of First Baptist Covington in general.

Today I want to get specific about several ministries that make a difference. The place where I live and minister is blessed with a number of ministries which are making a real difference. From food banks to pregnancy centers to homeless shelters, these ministries are touching the lives or hurting and needy people.

I am thankful for all of these ministries.

I am also thankful for those who minister through First Baptist Church. As we teach our new member class–ours is called the Discovery Class–we print a brochure describing all the opportunities for people to be involved. We attempt to list every ministry opportunity in the church. I’m sure we don’t list them all. Even then, it’s an amazing list.

Thanks for all of you who make this work.

Let me describe three ministries among the many that are making a difference.

Celebrate Recovery failed to meet last week (because of an ice storm) for the first time in four years. No matter what the rest of the world is doing–having Christmas, going to Mardi Gras–Celebrate Recovery is meeting to help people deal with the hurts, habits, and hangups of life. Recently, we have seen many people without addictions being blessed by the ministry of Celebrate Recovery.

Upward Recreation is helping our community to know Christ and helping parents raise Godly children. Children meet for fun and sports in a safe environment led by coaches who also share the word of Christ. We all understand the pull of sports–remember the Super Bowl? When coaches and leaders live for Christ and share Him, we have an opportunity to make a real difference.

I never cease to be amazed at our Special Needs Ministry. It’s now called AIM, an acronym for All Inclusive Ministry. AIM seeks to take the focus away from disabilities and instead emphasize the abilities God has given everyone. What a blessed opportunity to care for and love all of God’s children.

Isn’t it wonderful to support a church which makes a difference in our hurting world?

  1. I think James, Brother of Christ Jesus, would agree. It is the expression of Job. “I put on righteousness as my clothing; justice was my robe and my turban.” Job 29:14 As, “Even a child is known by his doings.”
Behold, I stand at the door and knock… Satan does not rest destroying.

    Blessings
