Who’s More Important, Jesus or the Super Bowl?

Like most of you I watched Super Bowl XLVIII with fascination Sunday night. While the game wasn’t a thriller or even in doubt after the first quarter, it still had plenty of interest on my part.

Part of the interest had to do with the approach the Seattle Seahawks took to the game. As one of the female readers of this blog said, they had a gameplan that worked. They took control of the game from the very beginning and dictated the tempo of the game.

But this blog post is not about football; it’s about something of ultimate importance.

After the game Sunday, Martha watched a YouTube of pastor Mark Driscoll of Seattle and four players and a coach of the Seattle Seahawks. They obviously are followers of Christ.

Pastor Driscoll asked them who Jesus is. They gave a variety of answers, all within the teaching of Scripture. They primarily answered what Jesus means to them. While I deeply appreciated the answers of the players, I was intrigued by the answer of Assistant Coach Rocky Seto who replied that “Jesus is the greatest treasure in the universe. . . .It’s not like you give up your life and you get something worse. . . . Jesus is everything. . . .Jesus is better than anything, better than the Super Bowl.”

At that point Pastor Mark laughed and asked if an NFL coach could say that? Is anything better than a Super Bowl? Coach Seto spoke for the group. We all want to win and we all want to be champions and get a ring, but no matter what happens “Jesus is way better still.”

We all need to learn from these Seahawks. We need to see what really matters in life.  We used to sing in church, “Jesus is all the world to me.”

He is the difference. I thank God for faithful witnesses like these players who wanted to tell people after a Super Bowl win that “Jesus is everything” to them.

  1. And, thus we have another example of God being in control by bringing a message that rivaled even Jonah’s. “Delusional”? Only those with the perverted sense of the lordship of their-self, being in supreme control of their lives, would think in such a way. Such a perverted person will stop at nothing to bolster their vanity of fantasy enabled by a well-meaning but misguided company. I pray with Thanksgiving for this to be: yet, another example of offering one’s upmost for His Highest as a “team.”

Pleased to play “Second Banana” to the King of kings and Lord of lords.

    Blessings

  2. I also watched an interview prior to the game on the700 club. They were putting a cd together to pass out as a testimony to Christ. The quarterbacks response was beautiful at the end of the game too.
