This Is How You Should Live

This is what the Lord says: “Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches. But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord who demonstrates unfailing love and who brings justice and righteousness to the earth, and that I delight in these things. I, the Lord, have spoken! (Jeremiah 9:23, 24 NLT)

Plenty of people have an idea of what makes life meaningful. We all have ideas of the things that we should emphasize.

Speaking through the prophet Jeremiah, God gave us an indication of what really makes life meaningful. He told us what not only makes life meaningful but more importantly what pleases God.

How should we live in order to please God? The prophet emphasized three significant points.

First, live a life of genuine humility. Don’t boast in wisdom or power or wealth. If you boast in anything, boast in your relationship with God. Paul emphasized the importance of boasting in Christ alone. This will call for dying to self and living to Christ.

To live well, we must understand who we are and our struggle with pride and boasting.

Second, the central aspect of life is to know God. Nothing is more important to life than knowing God. Without God, we cannot deal with our pride or promote justice and righteousness. Knowing God and His ways prepares for life. God wants us to know Him–and not in shallow ways. He wants us to know Him as He truly is.

Third, knowing God means knowing not only who God is but also knowing what matters to God. God is a God of justice and righteousness. He sees our love for Him through the aspects of right living.

Notice these words: “I delight in these things [justice and righteousness].” This is what matters to God. God wants us to live righteously and in obedience to Him.

This is how we should live.
