Love, Sex, and Marriage

We’ve learned at church to put “sex” in the title and more people will attend the class. This post isn’t about sex–at least not overtly. It’s about marriage and the people who have worked hard to make their marriages work.

One day soon I will write about the best advice I ever received about marriage. One of my deacons told me shortly before Martha and I married that “Marriage is good but you have to work at it.”

My definition of a good marriage is two people who have worked at making their marriage work.

It’s also about the blessing of God on your life.

On this Valentine’s Day, let me tell you about some couples who have worked at making their marriages work and who have been blessed immensely.

Each year the Louisiana Family Forum seeks to find the longest known married couple in the state. Each year I seek out those couples in my congregation to see whether or not they qualify.

I’ve found several couples that have been married almost 70 years–surely they would win. Nope. Not even close.

According to Gene Mills, the Executive Director of the family forum, the longest known married couple in the Louisiana–and the nation–is Norma and Norman Burmah. The Burmahs met at the “Roof Garden Dance Hall” in New Orleans during a live performance by Louis Armstrong. They were married January 26, 1931. They have been married 82 years!

This year the family forum will honor the ten couples who have been married the longest.

It’s a really good list to be on.
