Why Do You Do The Things You Do?

I am writing this on Thursday, but I’m thinking about Sunday.

I’m thinking about Sunday and the sermon I feel led to deliver to the people of my church.

Since the first of the year I have been preaching a series on things that are Trending. This week the sermon is how greed and selfishness are trending. The sermons are expositions on the Sermon on the Mount, specifically in Matthew 5 and 6.

I am in awe of the teaching of Jesus and the power of the Word of God. Jesus lived and preached 2000 years ago, but it really sounds as if it were written in a blog this week.

Matthew 6 is about motivation. Jesus wants to deal with why we do the things we do.

Jesus wants us to examine the inner person. He talks about spiritual disciplines–prayer, fasting, and giving. He assumes we will do all of these acts. What He wants to know is what is in our heart.

Is it about us or is it for God?

Do we love God or do we love to be seen?

Are we preoccupied with things or with God?

Jesus wants us to see as He sees and give as He gives. He wants us to have an eternal perspective and a heart that pleases God.

This is what He really wants: He wants us to pray for God’s Kingdom, fast for God’s kingdom, and give for God’s Kingdom. He does not want us to live the anxious life of those who are perishing but the peaceful and purposeful life of those who will live with Him forever.

He wants us to seek the Kingdom and put it above all else we do. He wants us to love justice, do mercy, and walk humbly with Him.
