Rethinking Repentance and Fasting

“Repentance means unlearning all the self-conceit and self-will that we have been training ourselves into . . . It means killing part of yourself”–C.S. Lewis.

“You wonder why the Lord pays no attention when you go without eating and act humble. But on those same days that you give up eating, you think only of yourselves and abuse your workers. You even get angry and ready to fight. No wonder God won’t listen to your prayers! Do you think the Lord wants you to give up eating and to act as humble as a bent-over bush? Or to dress in sackcloth and sit in ashes? Is this really what he wants on a day of worship? I’ll tell you what it really means to worship the Lord. Remove the chains of prisoners who are bound unjustly. Free those who are abused! Share your food with everyone who is hungry; share your home with the poor and homeless. Give clothes to those in need; don’t turn away your relatives”–Isaiah 58:3-7, CEV.

“The Lord said: It isn’t too late. You can still return to me with all your heart. Start crying and mourning! Go without eating. Don’t rip your clothes to show your sorrow. Instead, turn back to me with broken hearts. I am merciful, kind, and caring. I don’t easily lose my temper, and I don’t like to punish”–Joel 2: 12-13, CEV.

“Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known, and then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’–only to go on doing all these abominations? Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I myself have seen it, says the Lord”–Jeremiah 7:9-11, RSV.

  1. These verses of scripture really speak to me this morning. It gives answers to how one can think how only a period of time is acceptable for right behavior and worship to our God when our right behavior and worship should be daily and always. We are currently studying 1 John in our bible fellowship and what has been reveled to me fits right in. How the unbeliever does not welcome what comes from Gods spirit and how it is foolishness to them and they cannot understand. These verses need to be understood. Thanks Pastor.

  2. Your right on. I always think Ash Wed. Is over doing it as marking your face is sort of showing off piety not servitude of remorse for sin
