Sin and Obedience

“We never see sin aright until we see it as against God. . . . All sin is against God in this sense: that it is His law that is broken. His authority is despised. His government that is set at naught. . . . Pharaoh and Balaam, Saul and Judas each said, ‘I have sinned’; but the returning prodigal said, ‘I have sinned against heaven and before thee’; and David said, ‘Against Thee, Thee only have I sinned'”–W.S. Plumer.

“God wants us to walk in obedience–not victory. Obedience is oriented toward God; victory is oriented toward self. This may seem to be merely splitting hairs over semantics, but there is a subtle, self-centered attitude at the root of many of our difficulties with sin. Until we face this attitude and deal with it, we will not consistently walk in holiness”–Jerry Bridges.

“Any believer who is living in sin will feel hopeless, overwhelmed, with no joy. The first step out of the pit is to realize that Chris delivered us; sin no longer reigns over us. . . . God made it possible for a believer to walk in obedience; this encouraging fact gives us hope. Placing our hope in Christ leads us into joy, which gives us strength to take another step. In Christ strength (not ours), we gradually overcome the sins that used to easily entangle us. We discover that walking in holiness leads to an infinitely satisfying source of joy”–John Kincaid.

  1. Sin keeps us from entering into fellowship with God because God cannot look upon sin. That fact helped me to understand why, over the years as a Christian, I sometimes just didn’t feel like thinking “spiritual”. My mind did not want me to filter my actions through the Word of Truth. Isn’t that same rebellion what closed the door to fellowship on Adam?
