Becoming like Christ

God says He wants us to be holy because He is holy. God desires our sanctification. He wants us daily to be conforming to His image.

You may wonder how you can live a holy life. You also may wonder how you can experience sanctification.

God’s word is very explicit about this. We are to be transformed by renewing  our minds. “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” When we have renewed our minds, “Then you will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect his will really is” (Romans 12:2).

The question, therefore, becomes, what is helpful in renewing my mind?

First, determine to take on the mind of Christ (Philippians 2:5). To receive the mind of Christ, spend time in the gospels understanding who Jesus was and what He did. Paul says He was a man of humility. He had the attitude of a servant. He chose to leave the throne above to become the sacrifice for our sin. That mind will lead you toward sanctification.

Second, fill your mind with holy Scripture. The Psalmist told us to study, memorize, and meditate on Scripture because Scripture will help keep us from sin.

As we seek God in His word, we will begin to understand what matters to Him. God’s word will reveal God’s ways and God’s thoughts. This will lead us down the road to sanctification.

Third, we will experience sanctification as we open ourselves to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. As we are filled with His presence, He will flood our hearts and minds with the desire to please him and to follow in all His ways.

Let us use this day to draw closer to God so He may draw closer to us (James 4:8).
