Prayer That Counts

“Grant that I may not pray alone with the mouth; help me that I may pray from the depths of my heart”–Martin Luther.

“For it is as great an absurdity to suppose holy prayers, and Divine petitions, without a holiness of life suitable to them, as to suppose a holy and Divine life without prayers”–William Law.

“One good form of prayer at such a juncture is to ask that doors may be shut, that the way be closed, and that all enterprises which are not according to God’s will may be arrested at their very beginning. Put the matter absolutely into God’s hands from the outset, and He will not fail to shatter the project and defeat the aim which is not according to His holy will”–F.B. Meyer.

“You can do more than pray after you have prayed; but you can never do more than pray until you have prayed”–A.J. Gordon.

“Around midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening. Suddenly, there was a great earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off!”–Acts 16:25-26.

“Are you ever discouraged because of an unanswered prayer? How often we think when a prayer is not answered that God has said no. Many times He has simply said, ‘Wait.’ Never doubt that God hears our prayers, even the unusual ones. When God says, ‘No’ or ‘Wait,’ it is because He knows what we do not know. He sees His side of the embroidery all the time. One day we will see the same side as He does. Thank Him for every answered and unanswered prayer. To those who love God, all things work altogether for good”–Corrie Ten Boom.

  1. This post is so timely for me today. Encouraged greatly! I believe in the power of prayer- not because it takes away the pain or makes things easy but prayer brings peace in the midst of the pain.

    1. Deanna,, thank you so much for your comment. I agree with you that the most wonderful thing about prayer is that it brings us into the presence of God. And while we don’t want to suffer, sometimes being in the presence of God is simply enough.
