When Life Gets Overwhelming

Life can get overwhelming.

One of the strange parts of modern existence is how overwhelming life can get. When life should be easier–think of all the modern conveniences we have–it actually seems to become more difficult.

More stuff adds more stress.

My life should be so convenient. After all, I own an iPhone and an iPad and many other gadgets. Our house is equipped with the kinds of appliances and conveniences that would amaze my grandparents. It doesn’t seem to help.

More conveniences makes life more overwhelming.

How sad that suicide has become such a common occurrence.

What can I do to help myself when life gets overwhelming? These are the things I try to do.

First, I remember that the God who was with me in other trials and difficulties is with me now.

I have never, ever experienced any difficulty when God was not present. The Psalmist exulted over the truth which each of us should focus on: “I can never escape from your spirit! I can never get away from your presence!” (Psalm 139:7). He wasn’t complaining; he was rejoicing.

God has never forsaken me; He won’t start now. That is the practical value of knowing God is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Second, I remember I have people who are crazy in love with me. Family, friends, and church family love and value me and would do almost anything to help me. You have people like that as well.

I don’t think I have ever done this, but I recommend it for you. I plan to use it when I need it. When you are overwhelmed, tell someone about it and ask them to help you. Give them the specifics of how they can help.

Third, I remember to start whittling away at the tasks and worries that make me feel overwhelmed. Doing something helps me get over my fear that I’ll never get caught up.

Over the years I have found starting and sticking with a task has helped me get back to reality.

Above all, put your trust in God.

Victor Hugo said: “When you have done all that you can, go to bed. God is still up.”

Rest in His presence and power.

  1. Someone has said, “When you feel overwhelmed, just do the next thing.” I would add: prayerfully.
I love that Jesus said “My yoke is easy, my burden light.” What I take from that is, everything God wants me to do today and every day fits into the category of a yoke that is easy and a burden that is light. It’s up to me not to put hard yokes and heavy burdens upon myself or others.
