A Merry-Go-Round You Don’t Want to Ride

Why do I do what I don’t want to do?

And, why don’t I do the things that I want to do?

Of all the issues we face in our Christian lives this may be the most prevalent and the most common problem we face.

Is there any solution to this problem? Do we have any recourse to overcome this reoccurring issue in our lives?

Fortunately, we have everything we need. God has provided the resources we need to have victory over sin and to get off the merry-go-round of life.

The apostle Paul knew exactly how we feel about the struggle between our two natures. Our old fleshly nature wars against the Spirit and the Spirit wars against the flesh (Galatians 5:17).

Paul knew the sorrow accompanied by the struggle of the flesh and the Spirit. He talked about what he wanted to do but couldn’t do and what he didn’t want to do that he did (Romans 7:18-19).

How do we get off this merry-go-round of rebellion against the Christ we love so much?

First, we must acknowledge the battle and the enemy. You can’t win a battle if you don’t know what the battle is about and who the enemy is.

Our enemy is our old nature with its tendency toward sin and rebellion.

Second, the victory is won when we face the battle according to God’s plan. God has given us his Spirit. If we walk in the Spirit, we will not fulfill the desires of the flesh (Galatians 5:16).

Third, we must be filled with God’s Spirit.

Paul told us to be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).

To be filled with the Spirit is to be obedient to God’s leading in our lives. To be filled with the Spirit means He floods our life with His blessings and drives out that which would be harmful and rebellious.

There is hope for the struggle.

That hope is being filled with God’s Spirit.
