Knowing and Doing God’s Will

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose”–Jim Elliott.

“The more difficult our obedience, the greater our reward. I came to this conviction recently when reading Revelation 14. Verse 7 commands us to ‘fear God and give him glory.’ Why? In New Testament times worshipping the Roman emperor brought immediate temporal benefit, but eternal loss: such idolaters ‘will drink the wine of God’s fury’ (v. 10). By contrast, those who refused emperor worship often paid with their lives, but ‘blessed are the dead who die in the Lord,’ for ‘their deeds will follow them’ (v. 13). The more our obedience costs us today, the more it is rewarded forever. . . . What difficult decision is God asking you to make? It may be something you need to do or stop doing, someone you need to forgive or seek forgiveness from. If it were easy, you would have done it already. But know this: the harder the climb, the greater the height”–Jim Denison.

“If you are in doubt about any subject, you must, first of all, consult the Bible about it and see whether there is any law there to direct you. Until you have found and obeyed God’s will as it is there revealed, you must not ask nor expect a separate, direct, personal revelation. Where our Father has written out for us plain direction about anything, He will not make a special revelation to us about that thing. And if we fail to search out and obey the scripture rule where there is one, and look instead for an inward voice, we open ourselves to delusions and almost inevitably get into error. The Bible does not always give a rule for every particular course of action . . . . But the scriptures are far more explicit, even about details, than most people think, and there are not many important affairs in life for which a clear direction may not be found in God’s book”–Hannah Whitall Smith.

“And Peter said, ‘See, we have left our homes and followed you.’ And he said to them, ‘Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God who will not receive many times more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life’ “–Luke 18:28-30.
