Where Do I Go from Here?

“Where do I go from here?” seems to be the question of life.

How many times have you asked yourself, “Where do I go from here?”

All this week I have met with people who were asking, “Where do I go from here?”

Here are a few of the things I’ve seen happening in the lives of people this week.

A young family facing cancer – “where do I go from here?”

A tragic and unexpected death – “where do I go from here?”

An individual who has made a number of mistakes and who will have to deal with the consequences of those mistakes – “where do I go from here?”

The family facing problems who is wondering and worrying about the future – “where do I go from here?”

“My life is spiraling out of control”–“where do I go from here?”

Even a family who has been tremendously blessed. Sometimes the greatest dangers are the dangers of being blessed – “where do I go from here?”

What do we do when we’re trying to decide about our future?

Here are some ways you can find answers to this most basic of questions.

First, seek guidance. God wants to guide His people. He guided the people of Israel in the wilderness. He met their needs. The same God who guided Israel cares for you and will provide for your needs.

Seek His guidance. I love Psalm 37:4, “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Are you delighting in the Lord or are you wallowing in self-pity?

Second, seek opportunity. Look for opportunities for God’s direction and deliverance. At the same time look for opportunities to be a blessing to others. God may be showing you where to go as you seek to help other people who are also perplexed and in need.

Finally, seek good. The Prophet Amos called on the people of Israel to emphasize God and what He wants.

There are times when you seem to be stuck. What better thing than seeking to do good when all around you seems to be spiraling out of control.

These were the words of the prophet: “Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you, as he said. Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph” (Amos 5:14-15).

  1. Great advice for people in need of direction Waylon. These suggestions played out during our last crisis. Psalm 37:4 is a wonderful passage. Always praising and delighting in the Lord helps keep our mind off our troubles and gives us hope through faith. Wait in your delight and God always delivers your needs and more. Seemed like God revealed others in great need during our trials which made us realize we were not alone and the act of helping others gave us much needed redirection of our sorrows; and joy and thanksgiving from those we helped. Seek good not evil, and in everything you think, say and do, do what is pleasing to our Lord.
