What Now?

We’ve Black Friday and Cyber Monday, now what do we do?

Actually, there’s a very viable option. It’s called Giving Tuesday.

Started in 2012, Giving Tuesday has been widely accepted across the country, even the White House has adopted it.

You probably need to save and need to be frugal, but you also need to give. It’s a part of who we are.

Jesus repeatedly talked about money. In fact, Jesus spoke more about money than heaven and hell.

If you look at your own life, you will immediately understand why.

Money matters to human beings. The Gospel writers noted the Pharisees were lovers of money. John the Apostle gave us the insight that Judas Iscariot kept the money bag for the disciples and stole from it. We all have problems with greed and selfishness.

In the spirit of Giving Tuesday, what do we need to do?

First, we need to deal with the inner person. For most of us the problem about giving is not about money; it’s the problem of the heart. Jesus reminded us that from our hearts  proceed all kinds of evil, including greed and selfishness.

Second, we need to lay up treasure in heaven. We often equate treasure in heaven with good deeds. I certainly think it refers to righteous actions, but it probably means exactly as it sounds. When we give on earth we are really laying up treasure in heaven.

How large do you suppose your heavenly bank account is? Would you be able to live on  the amount you have given to God’s work?

Third, we need to be rich toward God. Jesus told us about a “Rich Fool.” He had plenty on earth but nothing in heaven. His goods required his life. Where did that leave him?

We become rich toward God by desiring what He desires and opening our wallets and purses for His good purposes.

Finally, we can begin the process of giving. This normally requires a conscious decision to give. You can’t be rich toward God until you choose to begin.

Almost all churches have special offerings for Christmas. At our church we emphasize missions to unreached people groups and the benevolent needs of our community. I’m sure your church has special Christmas projects where you can help. Find those opportunities and give more than you think you can.

You’ll be glad you did.
