What Jesus Revealed by Turning Water to Wine

What did Jesus reveal by turning water into wine?

We know that whatever Jesus did had meaning and significance for our lives. What does this nature miracle (affecting nature rather than healing a person) say to us?

First, it shows us God is vitally interested in everything about us. By attending a wedding feast shows His concern with us and all that involves us.

The wedding feasts of that day lasted a full week and involved the whole community. Jesus showed His concern for people by mingling with them in normal everyday experiences of life.

Sometimes we wonder if God knows who we are or what’s happening in our lives. Jesus’ interaction at the wedding feast shows that God knows us and that He cares.

Sometimes people tell me they can’t pray because “it’s too small for God to get involved.” I believe this miracle shows that nothing is too small for God. Or, possibly another way to look at is that “everything’s small to God.”

Second, it shows God has the power to affect our lives. John called this the first sign Jesus did to reveal who He was and what He came to do.It shows that Jesus is God and He has the power to touch us and bless us.

Third, His turning water to wine shows that He came from God with a special purpose in life. This “first of the signs” prepares us for the greater signs to come.

Finally, it shows us Jesus is God’s Son and should be followed and believed. John tells us what happened as a result of the water being turned into wine. The disciples of Jesus (not just the Twelve but all the followers including the women) put their faith in Him. They saw what John the Baptist and Andrew had seen. John the Baptist described Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). Andrew told Simon his brother, “We have found the Messiah” (John 1:41).

What should we do? We should get involved in people’s lives as well. We need, like John, to tell what we have seen and heard. We need to help our friends see the power of God to make us new and to help us with life.
