Living Rich

This weekend I will begin a new sermon series from the Gospel of John.

The new series is titled: “Living Rich: Eternal Life in the Gospel of John.”

We will have six messages which cover much of the Gospel of John. I developed this series when I discovered how often “eternal life” is found in John’s Gospel.

The term “Eternal Life” is a common one for almost anyone in America, whether churched or unchurched. It was new and different in Jesus’ day.

The Old Testament had some rare instances in which you get the idea of a resurrection or something like “eternal life,” but nothing like what Jesus taught His followers. Jesus introduced a wonderful, new concept that opened the door to knowing God and experiencing a rich, meaningful, and permanent life with God.

The phrase “eternal life” is found 29 times in the New Testament, 17 of those times are in the Gospel of John. (If you would like to read each one, you can find them in John 3:15, 16, 36; 4:14, 36; 5:24, 39; 6:27, 40, 47, 54, 80; 10:28; 12:25, 50; 17:2, 3).

In the Gospel of John the term “everlasting life” or “eternal life” refers to what we mean by “salvation.” In the other Gospels, the term means to “enter the kingdom of God.” In both of these instances, eternal life refers more to quality than quantity (though the quantity is part of what it means to have eternal life).

Jesus came to give you a rich and abundant life.

I am excited to preach and teach these messages. I believe we all will be encouraged as we share with our family and friends what it really means to know God and to experience a rich and abundant life.
