Four Things You Must Get Rid of to be Healthy

Few things in life are as valuable as being healthy. Yet we seem to persist in doing things that destroy our health–physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.

Here are four things which destroy health, and four things you must remove from your life to be healthy.

First, you cannot feed your mind filth and be healthy. The Scripture says that as we think in our hearts, that is who we are (Proverbs 23:7, KJV). “Heart” in the Old Testament can mean the will, the emotions, or the mind. In this context, it means the mind.

My mother used to say, “You are what you eat, and you are what you think.” If we feed our minds the unhealthy, the whole person becomes unhealthy.

Our world is overflowing with thoughts, images, and pictures which destroy the person. You have to shun those in order to be healthy.

Lust has become an accepted habit in America, but Jesus knew its destructive power. Isn’t it amazing how we so easily overlook or accept destructive sins?

Second, you cannot feed your body junk and be healthy. Our bodies were made to thrive and to give us the energy necessary to do well. Our diets are–literally–killing us.

Please don’t take me as a health food addict. I wish I were, and I wish I had become more conscious of what I eat much earlier in life.

Our bodies were made for good food and exercise. We can’t be healthy without either.

Third, you cannot feed  your emotions with negativity and be healthy. I suppose we all have to fight negative emotions. I believe joy, happiness, and peace are choices. They are often choices difficult to make, but they are life-changing choices as we make them day by day.

The less we have negative emotions toward others the more we will have happier and healthier lives. Anger, resentment, and bitterness kill the body and the soul.

Fourth, you cannot starve your spirit and be healthy. Recently, scientific studies have shown a strong correlation between regular worship attendance and the incidence of depression. Our incidence of depression seems to be amazingly less when we worship regularly.

America has its highest ever problem with depression as we descend to our lowest worship attendance at the same time. We can’t starve our spirits and expect to thrive otherwise.

We are not two or three or four parts–we are one, and everything works together to make who we are.

May you make healthy choices, and may God bless you with health.
