The Apostle Peter told us to “Always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 Peter 3:15).

While Peter gave this as a command, Christians still have difficulty providing solid, helpful answers of why we trust Christ and believe He is the answer.

How can we talk with our friends about our faith? Here some suggestions from God’s Word and human experience that you may find helpful.

First, look for every opportunity to meet with outsiders and to talk about “what makes you tick.” People like to know why we do the things we do. Peter simply bought into that desire in the human heart to understand our friends.

Ask God to open the door for sharing your faith. If you look for the opportunities you will find they come very often.

Second, get your testimony down to a succinct one or two sentences. Taking this approach has helped me immensely.

I came to faith in Christ early in my life after being raised in a Christian home. I didn’t have a dramatic testimony of a before and after. What I had was even more powerful. Because of God in my life, I have never been alone or felt hopeless. He is there, and He is watching over me. I can always count on Him. One human need is wanting to know we have someone who knows and cares.

Learning to quickly and easily tell what Christ has done for you will help you be faithful to tell others of Christ.

Third, don’t be intimidated or afraid if you are challenged. People will have questions. The woman at the well in Samaria challenged Jesus with protocol, theology, and human experience. Jesus patiently answered her questions and led her to a greater understanding of who He was.

Fourth, respect your friends. Give your testimony with “gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15). “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone” (Colossians 4: 6).

Be faithful to God, and God will be faithful to you. Take advantage of life around you to give an answer for your hope.
