One of the most remarkable aspects of being in Christ is that Christ prays for His people.

“Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died–more than that, who was raised to life–is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us” (Romans 8:34). The writer of Hebrews also speaks of Christ’s intercession. “Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25).

What does Jesus pray for you? What does he want to happen in your life?

John 17 records the high priestly prayer of Jesus (John 17:1–26).

While no one can be sure of the exact time of His prayer, most New Testament scholars believe that His prayer came after the last supper and before the Garden of Gethsemane.

What a momentous time in the life of Jesus and in the life of His followers!

John 17 can easily be divided into three parts. First, Jesus prayed for himself (John 17:1–5). Like us, it was natural for Jesus to spend time with the Father and to ask Him for strength and help in a difficult time.

Second, Jesus prayed for his followers (John 17:6–19). He asked that God would protect and keep those whom the Father had given Him.

He prayed that His followers might experience the joy that He experienced, and He prayed that God might keep them from the evil one. He even prayed they would be with Him!

Third, Jesus prayed for those who would believe in Him in the future (John 17: 20-26). He particularly prayed that they might be one even as He and the Father are one.

Isn’t it significant that our example for Christian unity is the unity of the Godhead? Our love for one another will be an example for unbelievers of the power of the Gospel.

Let us take heart knowing that Christ is at the right hand of the Father interceding for His people.

As Jesus prayed for us, let us pray for one another. Let us pray for the strength, joy, unity, and compassion of one another.
