Tomorrow’s My Big Day!

Tomorrow is an exciting day for me. At 10 o’clock tomorrow morning I will rappel down the Capital One building in Baton Rouge. The building is the second largest in the city (only the state capitol is taller).

The Capital One building is 24 floors and 308 feet.

I’m looking forward to rapelling. I’ve never done it before, though both of my girls have. I have a number of friends who have wished they could go over the edge with me. Because of them I am really looking forward to this.

While I love a challenge and an adventure, that’s not what this is about. It’s about raising awareness for the needs of children in our state. The needs for foster care and adoption are great.

What the churches in Louisiana and across the country need to remember is that we can answer most any need. There are many more churches in the state then there are children who need foster care or adoption. God has provided for the needs of the people around us. It is time for the church to step forward and complete God’s plan.

A number of people are going to rappel in order to raise funds and raise awareness. I am thankful to be included in that number and pray  God will use this to meet the needs of children. The Bible is very clear we are to care for the widows and the orphans. These are the most vulnerable in society and the ones who can be most blessed by the ministry of the churches.

James tells us this is the essence of real religion: “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world” (James 1:27).

I am thankful to the Louisiana Family Forum, the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home, CrossroadsNola, and other ministries  for their encouragement for people to care for foster children. All of these entities are worthy of our prayer and financial support.

  1. What you are doing tomorrow morning to bring awareness of foster care and adoption of children is fantasy. My our Lord give you a safe decent from the Capital One Bldg.

  2. Please be careful! I’ll be praying for your safety. Our children are the future of our country, and we definitely need to help with those who are orphaned or in foster care.

  3. Waylon, your love of children always warms my heart. I have seen you down on the floor wrestling with kids and doing all sorts of things that show them that you care for and love them. This is the best yet! God be with you!

  4. There are so many children out there who need our help and our prayers, not only orphans but abused, neglected and homeless children. You would be surprised to know how many are in need of help. Prayer is necessary, of course, but also we need people who can take these children in and provide for them.

  5. “Learn to do good; Seek justice, Reprove the ruthless, Defend the orphan, Plead for the widow.”
    – Isaiah 1:17

So proud of you, Dr, Bailey, for standing up (and rappelling down) for the more than 4,000 kids in foster care in our state!

  6. As a foster parent, words can’t express how proud of you I am for stepping up to raise awareness for these children. There is such a need for good foster/adoptive homes in our region and state. This became even greater a couple months ago when a new rule capped each home at a 5 child limit (including biological, adoptive, and foster children). Individuals can learn more about becoming a foster/adoptive home by visiting the Dept of Children and Family Services website: http://www.dcfs.louisiana.gov/index.cfm?md=pagebuilder&tmp=home&pid=375
