The Z’s  are coming. Are you ready? Is the church ready?

I’m somewhat fascinated with generational study. It’s interesting to see that generations are different in much the same way that individuals are different.

For example, think about the “Builder Generation.” They returned from World War II and built the country. It even happened in First Baptist Church, Covington.”When the boys came home from the war,” they built the new sanctuary(1948) at First Baptist Church. It was the first real sanctuary or worship center First Baptist Church had ever had. From 1904 to 1948, the church met in a retooled house that they used for Bible study and worship.

The Millennial’s were born between 1980 and the year 2000. To date, they are the largest generation in American history. They have their own characteristics, characteristics which the church must understand as we seek to reach this new generation. They are the most unchurched generation in the history of our country.

What about the youngest generation of Americans? These are the children born since 2001. They are sometimes called “Homelanders” because of their association with 9/11. They are also called Generation Z. Their parents were the Gen Xers and the generation of Millennial’s are also called Generation Y.

So these are the Z’s. They will become the largest generation in America.

What will the church do to reach these children.? They are 14 and under. The church has a small window to touch the lives of these children with the Gospel. What will we do?

The answer to that question will determine how your church ministers, grows, and serves in the future. How you answer that question may determine whether or not America remains a nation predominately Christian in its religion.

This is what I know about children. They have a heart for God and a desire to know Him. They love to ask questions about who God is and how He works. That, of course, is exactly what the Bible is about. You have this opportunity as parents and we have this window as the church.
