I wouldn’t normally get to watch golf on a Monday, but I did yesterday.
Several years ago, my church insisted I take time off in July (frankly, they no longer have to insist) and I am blessed immensely by their gracious concern for me. That’s why I was watching golf on a Monday.
I didn’t watch every shot, but I saw a lot of golf. It was a great tournament and a great final round.
Zach Johnson won his second major championship in a four hole playoff with Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman.
When Zach Johnson won the Masters Tournament eight years ago, he came across as humble, grateful, and unassuming. At that time, I learned that he and his wife were members of First Baptist Church, Orlando, Florida. They now live in St. Simons, Georgia, and I assume they continue to be active in church life.
At least, Zach Johnson gives every indication that he is.
This is part of what he said immediately after the win yesterday.
“I’m grateful. I’m humbled. I’m thankful. I’m honored.”
“I had Scripture going in my head and I thank the Lord. I thank my friends. I thank my family.”
He and his wife Kim have a foundation (Birdies That Care) to aid Iowa kids (his home state) who are facing challenging circumstances.
In these times of apostasy and rebellion against God, I believe God is going to give His people opportunities to praise Him and to lift His name up. You may wonder if I think God determines who wins golf tournaments. I really haven’t thought about that.
I do believe God lifts up those who lift Him up, and I believe God wants us to honor Him. It was good to see Zach Johnson take the opportunity to talk about Scripture going in his head.
Most of us don’t have a worldwide stage to talk about God, but we all have a stage.
