Sometimes we underestimate ourselves, and we underestimate God.
This may be one of the times in history when we are doing both.
We live in unprecedented times in America. We have never seen a time when secularism advanced and the church seemed to be on its heels. We may be going through a time of doubting ourselves and doubting God.
But this is not the time to wave the white flag or throw in the towel.
And it’s certainly not the time to doubt what God can do in the life of the Christian.
Let’s think about two things that we must not get wrong.
First, we must understand the greatness of God. God is the God of history. He knows both the beginning and the end. He was not caught off guard by the Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage. He was not surprised by the massacre in Chattanooga.
In spite of our evil, God is being patient before He returns. He desires the salvation of all people.
One of my favorite verses is Psalm 145:3, “Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised. His greatness is unsearchable.” That last phrase means that his greatness is beyond understanding or comparison. We cannot comprehend such greatness.
God is working his purpose in history. We must not doubt his greatness.
Second, we must not doubt the power that He has given to those who follow Him. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is the Spirit that empowers His followers and His church.
While we emphasize Christmas and Easter, the real birthday for the church is the day of Pentecost. On that day God bestowed his Spirit on the church. He empowered the church to proclaim His name and to serve Him according to the gift of the Holy Spirit.
We must not think of ourselves as weak or ineffective. We must think of ourselves as the people whom God has prepared to live in this time.
I am thankful God has judged us worthy to serve Him in these most difficult of times.
May we be found faithful as we carry out His purpose and make Him known.
