How Temptation Comes

“There is a God-shaped emptiness in every soul. Our Creator made us for constant intimacy with himself. As his children, our deepest longing is to know our Father. Satan cannot remove our desire for God, so he tempts us to fill it with anyone or anything that is not God”–Jim Denison.

“The more we sin, the more we are inclined to sin. . . . Every sin we commit reinforces the habit of sinning and makes it easier to sin. . . . Habits are the thought and emotional patterns engraved on our minds. These internal habit patterns play just as forceful a role as external influences on our actions–in fact, perhaps more so”–Jerry Bridges.

“Every lust is a depraved habit or disposition continually inclining our hearts to do evil”–John Owen.

“For out of the heart come evil thoughts–murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander”–Matthew 15:19.

“The world around us constantly seeks to conform our minds to its sinful ways. It is earnest and pressing in its endeavors. It will entice and persuade us (Proverbs 1:10-14). When we resist, it will ridicule and abuse us as ‘old-fashioned’ and ‘puritanical’ (1 Peter 4:4)”–Jerry Bridges.

“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world–the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life–comes not from the Father but from the world”–1 John 2:15-16.
