Do you want God to work in your life?
Acts 10 is a turning point in the history of the Christian church. At this point, God transformed the small but growing Christian church from a band of Jewish believers to a world wide missionary enterprise.
God showed Simon Peter – – who had been given the keys to the kingdom – – that those keys would be used to reach the world for Christ.
God worked mightily in the lives of a Gentile army commander named Cornelius and Simon Peter.
What must you do if you want God to work in your life?
First, God works in the lives of those who seek Him. We are told again and again to seek God with all our heart. God spoke through Jeremiah to give his word to the Jews in exile in Babylon: “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). God also said: “I will be found by you” (Jeremiah 29:14).
Second, God works through those who are willing to follow Him. We often expect God to work through the wise or famous or powerful. He does exactly the opposite. He has chosen the foolish of the world to serve him. Paul affirmed that “God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise” (1 Corinthians 1:27).
Though neither Cornelius nor Simon Peter knew what the outcome of their hearing from God would be, they were willing to be God’s servants.
Third, God works in the lives of those who put Him in charge.
As you read Acts 10, you immediately recognize God is in charge. He spoke to Cornelius, and He spoke to Simon Peter. He coordinated everything. He told both Cornelius and Simon what to do and both followed according to God’s leading. Following this simple plan shows us what can happen when we yield ourselves to God.
Because Cornelius and Simon Peter were willing to be obedient, the Christian church moved beyond the confines of Judaism and moved into a world needing to know God and his blessings.
God wants to work in us in the same way.
