How Should We Handle Persecution?

Sep.11“As we face escalating criticism and worse, it is vital that we speak God’s truth in love (Ephesians 4:15), turning the other cheek (Matthew 5:39) and going the extra mile (v. 41) to serve in grace. When our faith is most opposed, it is most needed. And most obvious to all”–Jim Denison.

“Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are when people insult you and persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you”–Matthew 5: 10-12.

‘You can kill us, but you cannot hurt us”–Justin Martyr to the Roman Emperor.

“I am reminded of Dr. Martin Luther King’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail correctly suggesting that everyone has a legal and moral responsibility to follow just laws, and that one equally ‘has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.’ He cited St. Augustine (‘An unjust law is no law at all.’) and St. Thomas Aquinas (“An unjust law is a human law that is not rooted in eternal and natural law.”) to justify this latter claim. He provided definitions to distinguish between just and unjust laws. A just law conforms to the moral law or the law of God, while an unjust law is out of harmony with that moral code”–Gene Mills.

“On the contrary: ‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good”–Romans 12:20-21.
