Sept.23

Can My Sins Be Fully and Finally Forgiven?

Sept.23Today is Yom Kippur, the day of Atonement. It began at sundown yesterday and will conclude at sundown today. This is a really big day for Jews.

Jews all over the world are fasting and praying as a sign of seeking God’s forgiveness. The meaning and significance of the Day of Atonement is found in Leviticus 16. Two animals would be offered for the atonement of the people. The first, a bull, would be sacrificed at the altar. The second, a goat, would be sent off into the wilderness as a beautiful picture that God has removed their sin.

“And it shall be a statute to you for ever that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict yourselves, and shall do no work, either the native or the stranger who sojourns among you; for on this day shall atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins you shall be clean before the Lord” (Leviticus 16:29-30).

Many Jews are observing a traditional day without much spiritual significance. “It’s just something we do. My father did it and I do it.”

Many other Jews are asking where they get their forgiveness. After all, if you don’t have a place to offer a sacrifice and don’t have a temple, where do you get forgiveness? Many close observers of Judaism and the nation Israel are noticing a profound hunger within the Jewish people to receive atonement for their sins.

A website called www.ImetMessiah.com has gone viral. I viewed it yesterday. It contains the testimonies of Jewish professionals who have met Messiah and have received atonement for their sins. It’s an exciting and fascinating website.

This is a really big day for the followers of Christ as well. Not only because we share the same Scripture, but because Jesus is the full and final atonement for all sin.

The writer of Hebrews showed the conundrum that all people face: I don’t have full and final forgiveness. If I did I wouldn’t have to make the same sacrifice year after year.”

God sent the Messiah to become our full and final sacrifice. Through Yeshua (Jesus) we have been made new and have had our sins forgiven once for all.

” And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, then to wait until his enemies should be made a stool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified” (Hebrews 10:11-14).

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
