Coping/Thriving: Learning to Live in Post-Christian America

Oct.3Today we begin a new sermon series entitled Coping/Thriving.

This series will explore how believers in the Lord Jesus Christ can live in the world but not of the world.

We all know how difficult this is.

It’s nothing new. Even in the days when it seemed that American culture favored or at least tolerated Christian faith, those who follow Christ have always been counter cultural.

It’s also nothing new to have to deal with the tension that exists from living in the world. Christians have always had this difficulty. How do I live in the world and share my faith and not let the world live in me?

In the Bible, “the world” describes a system that is opposed to God. Therefore, we will always have to deal with living as a part of this world without letting this world live in us.

I hope to give messages which are going to help you cope and thrive in the environment in which we live. I don’t want just to cope or simply to get by. I want to thrive, and I want you to thrive as well.

We have a responsibility to the world because of our responsibility to God. God has told us to be salt and light in our world. Let’s learn how to do that.

God also tells us of our responsibility to the state. We are citizens of two kingdoms with a responsibility to each one.

We also have responsibilities at work, at home, and at school. How do we participate in these activities without becoming stained by the world?

Please join with me as we hear the words of the apostle Paul telling us to make a difference in the world but not letting the world make a difference in us.
