If you’ve read anything about leadership in the last 20 years, you’ve read about vision and the necessity of communicating that vision to the people who follow you and your organization. As the Bible says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18).

Very few groups (even families) can really thrive without a vision.

Today, I want to talk about the “original big vision.”

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1)

In those simple words, we see the original big vision.

Recently, Martha and I visited the Creation Museum in Northern Kentucky, near the Cincinnati Airport. It was a fascinating visit.

One of the presentations we were blessed to attend occurred in the museum’s planetarium. It had to do with the vastness of space.

It is simply hard for our little minds to get our thoughts around the magnitude of the universe.

We can get a glimpse of the relative size of our world as we look at the moon and the sun. Our moon is only 225,000 miles away. Sometimes we see it and sometimes we don’t. It generates no light of its own but simply reflects the light of our sun. According to where our moon is in its rotation around the earth we either see it or we don’t. Sometimes it reflects fully the light of the sun and we have a “full” moon. Other times because of where it is in the sky we only see a sliver of light.

Our sun is 93,000,000 miles away. That is basically the extent of our solar system. Our moon has no life of its own but our sun produces light.

When we look at the stars we are seeing other suns in other solar systems and even other galaxies beyond our Milky Way.

When you take a few minutes to reflect on this immense universe, you begin to get in the mind of the Psalmist who said, “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained; What is man that You take thought of him, And the son of man that You care for him?” (Psalm 8:3-4, NASB)

God’s creation of the universe and His creation of human beings is the original big vision.

Somehow in the providence of God, you and I fit into this plan.

Let us see and understand why God made us and what he wants to do through us.

Because of who He is,”May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” (Psalm19:14).
