Living at Peace in a Fighting World

The statistics are astounding. They’re actually hard to believe.

The world is at war today, and it has always been at war.

Our sin nature makes the human race prone to war. Since Cain killed Abel, we have been at war with each other and at war with God.

These are the statistics: since 3500 BC the world has known only 292 years of peace. All of that came before AD 33.

In the 5500 years of recorded history we have had 14,531 wars and 3.6 billion people killed in the fighting.

These wars have cost an astronomical price in blood and treasure.

How can you and I live at peace in a world of fighting?

First, you must really know the Prince of Peace. Only Christ can bring peace to a fighting world.

When we know him as Lord and Savior, we also know that we are at peace with God because of the work of Christ on our behalf. “Therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1).

Second, learn to pray about everything. Paul said: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6–7).

Third, be filled with the Holy Spirit. When we daily yield our lives to the work of the Spirit within us, He daily produces His fruit within us. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23).

Fourth, keep your mind on God’s word and God’s ways. I love the promise that God will keep those whose mind is set on Him in “perfect peace” (Isaiah 26:3). And, I am encouraged that “When people’s lives please the Lord, even their enemies are peace with them” (Proverbs 16:7).

Obviously, we need to set our minds on God.

Finally, look for every opportunity to live at peace with the people around you. Peace and kindness produce peace and kindness in return. As you seek peace in your own life, extend it to others as well.
