I’ve recently learned the power of dictation, and my iPhone is a wonderful tool to use. I can dictate my blog to one of my productivity apps and then cut and paste to my WordPress website. It’s a really effective way to get more done.

There is one major problem: my iPhone doesn’t believe in sin.

Whenever I speak about sin and temptation, the iPhone prints it like this: “My iPhone does not recognize seen on and temp Tatian.”

Those of you who hear me speak may assume it’s my accent, but the iPhone seems to do well with my accent in other areas. I think the iPhone doesn’t get the problem of sin and temptation. I don’t think most people understand the problem.

People who don’t know Christ generally don’t think about sin. What they are doing is not right or wrong in their eyes; they are doing (or not doing) what seems normal to them. These are people who are defenseless against the schemes of the devil. They don’t have the Holy Spirit in their lives to give them the power of Christ to overcome sin.

Maybe these people are like the iPhone–they don’t see the problem or understand what it means to be enslaved to sin.

But, it is a big problem–the biggest problem of all.

What do we need to know about the problem of sin?

We are all sinners and in need of cleansing and forgiveness. This is not simply an outward problem. It is an inward situation of the heart. It is the heart of humans that is “deceitful above all things, and desperately sick” (Jeremiah 17:9).

What have we done? We have forsaken the fountain of living waters and turned to broken cisterns that cannot satisfy (Jeremiah 17:13). When given the chance to drink from a pure mountain spring or a cesspool, we have chosen the cesspool. That is the problem of sin.

We need to know God can change hearts and mend lives. We need to know God has provided a way of escape from our tragic plight. Jesus said: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10).

Whether or not my iPhone believes in sin, God believes in you and me and wants to heal our broken and ineffective hearts.
