What Gives You Hope?

Luke eight is one of the most hopeful passages of Scripture in the Bible.

It’s not so much the specific words that are said, but it is the hopeful message that is given.

Luke eight shows the love of God and the power of the Lord Jesus Christ.

This is the gist of the chapter: Jesus, the twelve, and many of His other disciples went through the cities and villages, “preaching and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God” (Luke 8:1).

On this journey, Jesus crossed to the other side of the lake and found a man possessed and overcome by demonic activity. He cast out the demons and changed the man’s life forever.

Then, Jesus met a ruler of the synagogue whose 12-year-old daughter was dying. Before he could go to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, he was met by a woman who had had a hemorrhage of blood for 12 years.

Jesus healed the woman who had the hemorrhage of blood and raised the 12-year-old girl from the dead.

What does this show us about the Lord Jesus Christ?

First, God is great. I love psalm 145:3, “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.” The last phrase means that He is great beyond anyone’s comprehension.

When Jesus cast the demons out of the man of Gadara, healed the woman with the hemorrhage, and raised the daughter of Jairus from the dead, He proved his greatness. He showed Himself to be the Lord over disease and death.

Second, God is good. “O Give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever” (Psalm 136:1).

Sometimes we aren’t sure that God is good, but He is. We can trust Him with our lives, our families, and our future.

Finally, this passage shows that God is the God of eternity. We live in a very short and narrow time. If we are truly blessed we might live to be 90 years of age, but God is concerned with all of eternity. He cares for us now and for all eternity. He desires that we would be with Him forever.

Nothing in all creation can compare to the greatness, goodness, and eternal love of our heavenly Father.
