Super Bowl has become a phenomenon in American life.

In effect it has become another holiday. For example, more pizzas are sold on Super Bowl Sunday then any other day of the year. I read yesterday that Super Bowl Sunday is the second most “eating day” of the year. I suppose Thanksgiving is the number one “eating day.”

The firs Super Bowl pitted the upstart American Football League against the well-established National Football League. That 1967 game matched the world champion and seemingly invincible Green Bay Packers coached by the legendary Vince Lombardi against the American Football League champion Kansas City Chiefs.

One of my childhood Idols from Lanett, Alabama, played for the Chiefs in the first game. His team lost and his pay for the game totaled $7500, an amount that was as much as most players made for a year! Today’s game will pay $98,000 for the winners and $49,000 for the losers.

As much as this has become a new holiday in America, do you remember who won the game two years ago? I only remember the New England Patriots won last year because of “inflate gate.” Do you remember who won last year’s World Series? Maybe you remember all of this. For me, it’s beginning to all run together.As we contemplate the game and replay it today around the copy machine, we need to remember what really matters.We need to consider the question of Jesus: “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36).

We also need to remember what really matters in our lives – – our families, the future generations, taking the gospel to all the world, and the pain so many people live with.

Let us resolve to make every day a day of joy and blessing as we live in Christ and give our lives to him.
