Learning How to Start Over

Feb 15Yesterday I asked the question, “How do I get to the next level?”

We examined Paul’s words to the Ephesians encouraging them to put off the old nature and to put on the new nature in Christ. “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of our minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:22-24). You can read that post here:

Now we come to the practical application of getting that done.

We all want to get to the next level in life, but we often don’t know how to take the necessary steps to institute lasting change.

How do I begin the process of getting to the next level?

First, start small.

Many times we live in a grandiose world where everything is just a mouse click away. We think that all our problems can be solved easily and quickly—much like the ads that claim anyone can lose 15 pounds in a week.

We really need to start small. When people tell me they want to change their lives, I always tell them to take one area at a time. Deal with what you can and then move to other areas.

Second, start today. You can’t wait until Monday morning to start different eating habits. You must do so today. You can’t wait on a better day to seek to live like Christ. You must start now.

Third, establish systems to help you make this a constant part of your life. Most of us need a process to help us accomplish our goals. Find a system that will help you.

Many of you know that I struggle with emails. I have often said of my church, “I will preach for free; just pay me to read emails.” (I really don’t mind emails; please don’t hesitate to write me!).

Recently, I found a system that has helped me deal with the volume that I receive. It has really helped me to get done the things that matter.

As you institute changes, find a system or plan to help you. Then follow the plan. (Most plans work, but they must be stringently followed.

Finally, ask God to help you. Be sure to pray for God’s help as you begin your new way of living. He cares for you and wants to bless you as seek Him.

I write a devotional like this every day except most Sundays. If you would like to receive your own copy in your inbox each morning, please subscribe at waylonbailey.com. We do not give out your email address.

  1. Sharing this today with someone whose home burned to the ground yesterday. This 4-step process may have been intended for our spiritual lives, but it will be helpful no doubt if these friends will also apply it to their material lives. While we are ‘talking,” thank you for your blog ministry. It extends your Biblical wisdom and influence far beyond your “Jerusalem.”
