How to Pray for Your State Legislature

Yesterday morning I had the wonderful opportunity to go before the Louisiana State Senate and pray at the opening of their session.

Yes, they do have a prayer at the beginning of their session. They have done so for years.

How do you pray for your state legislature?

Here’s how I prayed for mine.

First, I bragged on God. All our prayers need to have an element of praise to God. I began my prayer and praise by quoting Psalm 8:1: “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is youro name in all the earth.”

I then quoted the Psalm that speaks of how great God is. “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised. and his greatness is unsearchable!” (Psalm 145:3).

At that point I spoke to God about his goodness: “For the Lord is good;  his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations” (Psalm 100:5).

All of prayer needs to include praise to God for His immeasurable goodness and kindness.

My prayer then asked that our legislature would look to God for guidance and that they would be directed by the wisdom of God. God tells us that “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach” (James 1:5).

Our legislators need wisdom for leading the 4 million people in Louisiana.

God tells us to pray for all those in authority.

Finally, I prayed for my own state senator whose wife is battling cancer.

It’s easy for us to forget that our legislators are real people with real needs.

They need us to pray in the same way that we need others to pray for us.

Would you join with me to commit to pray for those in authority?

We have great needs that call for great prayer.
