For several weeks, I have been preaching a series of sermons about Godliness. Godliness is God’s desire for us. He wants us to be like Him.

Why does Godliness matter? Yesterday, I preached from Exodus 33:1-6 on “Why Godliness Matters.” In addition to what is implied in Exodus 33, there are other very important reasons why Godliness matters to God and should matter to us.

First, Godliness matters because it implies obedience on our part. You can’t be God-like if you don’t do the things that are like God. God is perfect moral purity. He is kind and caring. He is love. A Godly life is a life of obedience to God.

When we do the things He commands, we are moving toward Godliness.

Second, Godliness matters because it changes the course of our lives. As we grow in Godlikeness, we are being changed into the image of Christ–which is the goal of the life of a Christian. We move from greater sin to greater faith and faithfulness.

Third, Godliness matters because our being like Christ encourages both the saved and the lost. It encourages other believers to persevere under the load of persecution and difficulty in life. When we see examples of God’s power in other people’s live, we are naturally drawn to following God even more.

It encourages the lost by showing the power of God which is available to us. Nothing helps lost people to be saved like seeing changed lives.

Fourth, Godliness matters because it is God’s intention for believers. When we seek Godliness, we are seeking God Himself.

Finally, Godliness matters because it is the goal of the follower of Christ. “For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope–the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who give himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good” (Titus 2:11-14).

Let us move toward becoming like God.
