How Can We Best Serve America?

In his 1961 inauguration address, newly elected President John F. Kennedy challenged the American people to “Ask not what your country can do for you–ask what you can do for your country.”

His challenge ignited a whole generation to think differently about the country. Those first patriots, most of whom suffered greatly and lost much, were not asking what the country could do for them. They were deciding what they could do for the country. They cared for the cause of freedom and liberty and made America the greatest country on the face of the earth.

Sometimes people feel embarrassed to talk about the greatness of America. But look around. Where do people have equality of opportunity, freedom to live their lives openly, and the right to push for change?

Christians especially should seek to find what they can do for their country. You and I have a unique and life-changing perspective about living. We need to look for ways to bless America so that America can bless the world.

How can we best bless America? I have three suggestions.

First, do everything in your power to make your church strong, healthy, committed, and faithful to the Lord. Strong churches will make a strong America.

Maybe we are going through this time of weakness in our country because churches are weak as well.

A strong church is up to you.

By the way, you would also do well to ask, “What can I do for my church rather than what can my church do for me?”

Second, you can seek every opportunity to “give an account for the hope that you have in Christ Jesus.” (1 Peter 3:15).

President Putin in Russia is working now to outlaw evangelism in his country–even evangelism in private homes. Who knows when we will we will be shut out from openly declaring our faith? Let us take every opportunity.

Third, let us pray for America and for a third great awakening in our country. Let us pray for revival and cry out to God for His blessings upon this great nation.
