I love working outside in the yard, but I don’t always have the time I need to do it.

Last Friday evening was one of those times. I was working hard with my weed eater (it’s really not a Weed Eater brand, but you get the idea). Even though it was late in the afternoon the temperature was still high and the heat index even higher.

My friend Tom happened to come by my house at just the right time. He stopped, and so did I. We talked for a few minutes,  and he noted how hot it was. In response I described how I actually rather enjoyed being outside and working hard.

After we finished our conversation, he began to pull off and say, “I hope you get it finished.”

I sort of complained by saying, “By the time I get it finished it’ll be time to start again.”

Then he said something I never expected. “Well, you said you enjoyed it, and it’ll always be there for you.”

I did not have a reply. I’ve been thinking about that ever since. We don’t think of work–certainly growing grass–“being there for us.” But, maybe we should.

Isn’t part of the enjoyment of life having something to do? Isn’t it about being able to look at what you did and seeing what you’ve accomplished?

How many times have you seen a man or woman who couldn’t wait to retire and then couldn’t wait to go back to work?

God made us to work and to accomplish.

Before sin entered the world, God made the man He had created “to till the ground and keep it.” God gave Adam a garden to work in and to spend time with God as he worked.

It’s as if God said, “It’ll always be there for you. From it, you’ll get enjoyment and satisfaction. You will get to see what you have been able to accomplish.”

Our work has a purpose. Through it we learn and grow. It gives us satisfaction and enjoyment.

Work also lets us worship. As we work, whatever we do should be done for the glory of God. It should exalt Him and please Him.

More than for a paycheck, we should work to please and glorify God. Have we considered that God wants to commune with us as we work? Like Adam in the garden, we should see that our work for God and His glory, that God can speak to us in the middle of the work that we do.

Let your work be your worship and your work will always bring joy to your life.

It will always be there for you.
