Why We Pray

“[When threatened with the fiery furnace the three friends of Daniel showed that] Their obedience was unconditional, no contingencies on what God must do in return. Often people pray ‘God, get me out of this, and [if you do] I’ll do whatever you say!’ The 3 men did not try to negotiate with God, or to change His mind–only to obey. The purpose of prayer is not to persuade God, but to conform ourselves to His will”–John Kincaid.

“Why do you pray? Is it simply to seek God’s blessing on what you propose to do or because you hope God will get you out of the fix you’ve created for yourself? While we pray for many different reasons, these are the three reasons I see for fervent prayer. First, we pray to meet God. Prayer brings us into the very presence of God. If we will not pray for this reason, there is no real reason to pray. Second, we pray to learn what matters to God. As we read Scripture and pray, we begin to see not just what we think important but what God thinks is important. Finally, we pray to get ourselves to do what matters to God. Do these things and your prayer life will become much more urgent and fulfilling”–Waylon Bailey.

“I urge, then, first of all that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people, for kings and all those in authroity, that we may lead peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth”–1 Timothy 2:1-4.
