When God builds a church, how does He build it? Another question to ask is, “How does God want us to build His church?

The Acts of the Apostles shows us powerful pictures of how God builds His church.

As you read through Acts, you see the church at work. You also see things that shouldn’t be there – – think of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5. These were people who had agendas and wrong motivation.

The Acts also show how God builds His church and gives us a perfect example of what we should emphasize in our churches.

Nothing shows that example like the summaries Luke gives us in Acts.

How does God build his church?

First, he builds His church on the Apostles’ teaching. The early church followed the Apostles’ teaching about the Old Testament, the crucifixion and resurrection, and sound theology.

This teaching is now found in our New Testament. The church must be a New Testament church. It must be based on the revelation given to those early disciples as they spent time with Jesus and observed both His crucifixion and resurrection.

Second, God builds His church on the fellowship of believers. This fellowship is a deep and abiding relationship with God first and then with one another. God’s church is a “one another” church. In God’s church we love one another, encourage one another, pray for one another, and minister to one another. That is the definition of fellowship.

Third, God builds His church on prayer. Luke notes how the church prayed. They sought God.

Finally, God builds His church on ministry and service to one another and to the world at large. God desires that no one should perish and that all should come to the knowledge of the truth. It is His will for this to happen.

The church must be about showing others how God transforms lives by the power of the Holy Spirit.

We should seek to make our churches after the plan of God.
