Are You Underestimating God?

I know it sounds strange to ask people who love God and attend Church regularly, but I want to ask if you are underestimating God?

I suppose it’s easy to think that God can’t or won’t work in our world.

The apostle Paul said that God will do super abundantly more than anything we can ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20–21).

Paul wrote those words as part of a doxology, a spoken word of praise to God.

Paul had already said that God’s Spirit is at work within His people. This is the same power that raised Jesus from the dead. That power is at work within us.

Let me ask you three questions.

First, are you underestimating prayer? Jesus told us that anything we ask in His name, that is, according to His character and will, He will do.

We are to pray fervently and persistently. We are to pray believing, knowing that God is at work within us doing immeasurably more than we could ever ask or even imagine.

Isn’t it time to pray persistently, fervently, and with confidence that God hears our prayer?

Second, are you underestimating the work of the Holy Spirit? If the same power is within us that raised Jesus from the dead, we can accomplish those things which please God.

Isn’t it time that we submitted ourselves to the Holy Spirit? Isn’t it time that we do what Paul said and be filled with the Spirit? Paul’s command in Ephesians 5:18 is a present imperative, meaning that it is a continuing command. We are to be constantly filled with the Spirit.

An individual told the great evangelist Dwight L. Moody that the world would be amazed at what could be done through one man submitted to God. Dwight L. Moody said, “I want to be that man.”

Third, are you underestimating God’s plan? God has a work and purpose for us to do. When God calls a person, he gives everything needed.

In his defense before King Agrippa, Paul asked, “Why should any of you consider it incredible that God raises the dead?” (Acts 26:8). And, why should we underestimate the God who creates worlds and raises the dead to life?

Let us be that generation that gives ourselves wholly and completely to God that He might do his great work through our lives.

  1. Maureen and I learned many years ago that we must live by faith. I literally told God that “there has to be more to you than what I am experiencing by just going to church. Your Word tells me that you are dynamic and that you seek to lead us”. From that moment in time God began to show his face to us. We have had prayers answered and have experienced literal miracles as we trusted Him to help us through life. We learned that in Hebrews 11:6 where it says, “…he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him”, does not mean that he will reward us with stuff. We have found that it means we are rewarded with access to and fellowship with him. I have found that faith is the fuel that feeds the Christian and moves him forward. Father is just waiting for us to trust him.
