I am writing this on Tuesday afternoon, waiting for the polls to close and the votes to be counted. Sometime late tonight we will know who the next president of the United States will be.

No matter who is elected (and yes, it does make a real difference to me) Christians have an obligation to God to pray for those who are in authority.

Jesus told us to render to Caesar the things that are Caesars, and Paul told us to pray for all those in authority (1 Timothy 2:1–4).

Paul also told us to submit to authority. Those in authority have been ordained to reward those who do good and punish those who do evil (Romans 13:1-7).

How should we pray for those in authority?

First, we should pray for wisdom and discernment for those who lead. Solomon prayed exactly in that way. He asked: “How can I judge this great people?” He prayed to the Lord, “So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours (1 Kings 3:9).

Solomon recognized the enormity of the task. He wisely understood that he didn’t have all the answers but that God gave wisdom liberally to those who ask (James 1:5).

Whoever governs our divided nation will need wisdom.

That person will also need an understanding heart of how to deal with hostile powers all over the world.

Second, we should ask for Godly, thoughtful, and wise people to come around whoever is elected president. We have seen that both of the major candidates need the encouragement and direction of Godly people.

Third, we need to pray that our next president will understand the kind of world in which we live and the needs that we have for protection and safety.

Fourth, we need to pray that our next president will carry out the stated purpose of government, that is, to protect those who are living quiet and peaceable lives. We should pray that our next president would be honorable, trustworthy, and caring for the people of the country.

Finally, we should pray that revival would come over our nation and that whoever leads us would lead us in paths of righteousness(Psalm 23:3).

Our next president has a difficult job. Let us be faithful to pray as God directs.
