What Makes Thanksgiving Special?

No one can doubt that Thanksgiving is special.

It’s the biggest travel week of the year, and families use this time to get together across the generations. I saw someone yesterday who said they would have 20-30 people at their house, including family, friends, and even neighbors.

What is it that makes this such a special day?

First, this is a day for family. Most families have a tradition that calls for the same food, same routine, and same kind of experience every year. A full day of football games brings many families together around the TV set.

Second, it is a day to remember our common experience as Americans. On this day we remember where we came from. It gives us the opportunity to remember we were all pilgrims to this land.

Third, it gives the opportunity to reflect on the unique blessings given to this nation. We are unique. There is no other place quite like America. I think that is why so many people obsessed over this presidential election–both prior to and after the election. We all know this is a special place, and we don’t want to lose it.

Finally, Thanksgiving is special because it calls us to God. At least for one day, we can all bow our heads and reflect upon God’s goodness. As Thanksgiving reminds us that America is special, it also reminds us that we are special to God. His blessings and His goodness overwhelm us.

I think we enjoy slowing down and thinking about what God has done and who we are in relation to Him.

That would be a really good thing to do today.
