Joseph and Biblical Manhood

What can Joseph teach us about being good men?

We learn what we call the “birth narrative” from Matthew 1–2 and Luke 1–2.

Both of these birth narratives are filled with historical, geographical, and political truth. In addition, these Gospels are filled with teachings which are true to human nature.

Each gospel takes a differing viewpoint about the birth of Jesus.

Matthew looks at the birth of Jesus through the eyes of Joseph. The text even has a manly feel to it. Luke on the other hand looks at the birth of Jesus through the eyes of Mary.

Joseph shows us tremendous lessons about what it means to be a good, Godly man.

First, Joseph depicts a man who is strong in principle and strong in caring for his family. At the same time, we see the gentle strength and sensitivity of Joseph. Joseph shows us a man who is strong and gentle, kind, thoughtful, and caring.

Joseph shows us a man who can do more than take care of his family’s physical needs. Men often put the physical above every other need. Joseph, on the contrary, cared for the physical without neglecting the emotional and spiritual needs of his family.

Joseph also shows a man who is closely in tune with God. God showed Joseph his will, and Joseph responded decisively.

Joseph did three things well. (1) Joseph listened intently to the voice of God and responded obediently. (2) Joseph met the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of his family. (3) Joseph acted decisively and without wavering to fulfill God’s leading in his life.

Aren’t these things that wives, children, and society need from men?

Shouldn’t we be that kind of person?
