How Can We Know God?

How can we know God?

We all have a problem.

How can we know God? How can we know what He’s like and what matters to Him?

These are fundamental questions about life. How do I know there really is a God, and how can I get to know Him?

We understand the problem. John stated it well: “no one has ever seen God.” (John 1:18).

These questions seem to be some of the reason why John the apostle wrote what we know as “The Gospel of John.”

He wrote his gospel “That you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31).

God came to reveal Himself and through Him to give us life.

God solved this problem for us by becoming human flesh and dwelling among us.

The Word (Jesus Christ, the second person of the Trinity) became human and lived among His people. By doing this, the Son of God revealed God to us. John put it this way: “No one has ever seen God. But the one and only Son is himself God and he is near to the father’s heart. He has revealed God to us” (John 1:18).

When the Word became flesh, He showed us the father.

This is why Christmas matters. I suppose we don’t have to celebrate Christmas, but we can’t do without Christmas.

Christmas shows us the love of God and the desire of God for us to know Him.

God did the unthinkable and the unimaginable for human beings. He came to earth to reveal Himself and having revealed Himself to die on our behalf. “He who knew no sin became sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

That is a fact worth celebrating all year long.
