You may have seen this picture this week. If not, you have surely seen it through the years.

It’s one of those pictures that really doesn’t seem possible, but it is very true. This is the last of the “Tunnel Trees.” These trees were hollowed out over 100 years ago (the 1880’s) to aid tourism in California.  The tree in the picture is the iconic tree that is big enough to drive a car through. It’s one of the things I have always wanted to do.

That will not happen now. This week the massive winter storm on the west coast felled this tree. Even before the storm, the park service had restricted the tree for foot traffic only. The tree was a giant Sequoia in the Calaveras Big Trees State Park. This particular tree, also known as the Pioneer Cabin Tree, may be the most photographed tree in the world.

When I look at this tree, I remember Scripture. The Psalmist asked a question we all should ask: “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that your are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?” (Psalm 8:3-4). God’s creation–it’s beauty, mass, and variety–quickly points to the Creator.

The Psalmist followed his question with the truth of God’s work on our behalf: “You made [human beings] little lower than the heavenly beings.” God gave us dominion over the birds of the air, the fish of the sea, and every living creature (Genesis 1:28). We have responsibility to care for the Creation and use it to please God.

We are not called to worship the creation but to worship its Creator.

If the creation is this wonderful, how amazing  the Creator must be!

Let us worship and exalt Him and magnify His name in all the earth.
