Lessons from Super Bowl LI

You probably watched all or part of Super Bowl LI. After all, 111 million people did, but it did make me wonder, “What were all those other people doing?”

I love sports, with football coming at the top of my list. I love what sports teach us about life.  In my little time of playing competitive sports, I learned tremendous lessons about teamwork, about effort, and about a never give up attitude.

What can we learn from Super Bowl LI?

First, we all saw the importance of never giving up. Prior to this year’s Super Bowl, no team had ever come from behind by more than 10 points in a Super Bowl to win.

The New England Patriots were behind 21–0 and then 25-3 before coming back to win the game in overtime.

Here’s what Tom Brady, Patriots’ quarterback and most valuable Player in the Super Bowl, had to say: “We never felt that we were out of it.”

How important is that attitude to life? Would that attitude positively affect your work, family, or church?

Second, we learned that you can never let up or never assume that the battle is over. We don’t know exactly what caused Atlanta to lose or the Patriots to win, but we all know the value of continuing on and giving our best in both bad times and good times.

Third, Super Bowl LI shows us the power of team work. Brady acknowledged team work when a reporter gave him the credit “for bringing the team back”. Brady corrected the reporter by saying that “we all brought the team back.”

Jesus called a team. He brought twelve people to Himself and sent them out “two by two.” Everything we do in the church is by team work. We are the body of Christ. We do our best when we work together to carry out His purpose.

What lessons can you learn from the Super Bowl? What can you do differently for God’s Kingdom?

  1. Thank you Waylon for this message. I would encourage everyone to look up Barry Black’s, chaplain of the senate, speach at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington DC. The Holy Spirit was definitely present.
